Columbia Correctional Institution is the main state correctional institution in the Columbia complex east of Lake City. FDC, not the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, controls the public prison release trail. A person can leave this institution through final sentence expiration, a qualifying supervised release, conditional release or old-law parole where applicable, or transfer elsewhere in the FDC system. Each event may remove the person from the main institution, but only a completed release or discharge ends prison custody.

Transfers within the complex need special care. Movement to Columbia Correctional Institution Annex, Columbia Work Camp, Lake City Bridge Community Release Center, or another FDC institution is an institutional placement change. Arrival at a community release center can permit work or structured movement in the community while FDC custody continues. 3. Open the matching detail. Compare name, DC number, birth data, offense information, release date, and release status.
4. Run the Supervised Population search to see whether a qualifying post-prison supervision record follows the release.
5. Check the Population search when the record may describe a transfer or a projected date rather than completed discharge.

Columbia CI Search Fields

A release result is strongest when the DC number and several identity fields agree. Names can be shared or entered under aliases. FDC offers an alias option and photo-display controls, but a photograph should support, not replace, the DC number, date of birth, offense, and incarceration dates. Open the detail rather than relying on a list row because the detail gives the context needed to distinguish a past release, scheduled release, and present custody.

The statewide search is not a Columbia County bond-out list. It does not replace the sheriff's release file for someone who left the county jail without entering FDC custody. Choosing the last legal custodian first prevents that common mismatch.

An active FDC population detail may display a Current Release Date. Florida Statute §944.275 calls the gain-time projection a tentative release date. Eligible gain time can be awarded, withheld, forfeited, or restored. Another sentence, detainer, or court order may also affect the date.

For many offenses committed on or after October 1, 1995, incentive gain time remains subject to exclusions and an 85-percent service floor. Court-awarded credit for time physically incarcerated can count toward that floor. The exact rule depends on offense and sentence facts. That is why a projected date should be read from the current FDC record and governing order, not recreated with informal arithmetic.

Columbia CI Release Records

When the public detail is unclear, request the FDC release or discharge record rather than asking the institution to make a broad status judgment. Give the full name, date of birth, DC number, and approximate incarceration or release dates. Ask for the release date and type, relevant incarceration history, and digitized inmate photograph if needed. Florida public-record rules permit redaction of medical, victim, witness, security, and other protected information while nonexempt material may be produced.
